About SHIFT
Shift your habits for a long and healthy life!
SHIFT stands for “Safety & Health Involvement For Truck drivers.” The program is meant to be a fun way to boost your safety and health on the road. The program begins and ends with a health assessment, and all drivers participate in a competition, training certification, and health coaching.
Health assessments
Each participating driver will compete a health assessment at the beginning and end of the SHIFT program. The health assessment involves surveys, physical measurements, fitness tests, and a blood test (cholesterol, triglycerides, and glucose levels). SHIFT staff will help drivers learn how to use the computer-based training. If you are already enrolled in the SHIFT program, please click on the Training and Testing link for instructions on completing your health assessment and getting started. If you're not enrolled, the instructions can be found here.
Weight loss and safe driving competition
The SHIFT competition is meant to provide extra motivation to make healthy and safe choices on the road. The competition is focused on:
- percentage of weight loss goals achieved
- engine computer records of time overspeed and hard braking
Drivers are assigned to a squad (group) for the competition based on their employer or time of enrollment. During the 6-month competition drivers provide weekly updates on body weight (on this website or by phone), and companies provide driving data from truck engine computers. Feedback on the squad competition is provided on this website and through regular mailings to drivers. Winning squads (weight loss and safety) receive a cash pool and leather jackets with the SHIFT logo!
Training certification in exercise, diet, and safety
SHIFT training is meant to provide drivers with the knowledge to make healthy and safe choices on the road. The training is provided on computers and covers the topics of exercise, diet, and safety. Drivers who don’t have a personal computer can borrow a laptop. Earning SHIFT certification is as easy as 1, 2, 3!
- Complete computer-based training and pass knowledge tests on this website with 80% correct
- Complete a one-week habit-tracking assignment for each training topic and mail it to SHIFT
- Show an improvement in body weight OR safe driving statistics during the competition period.
SHIFT Certification is recognized with a window sticker, jacket patch, and gift with the SHIFT logo.
Individualized health coaching
Each SHIFT participant receives four phone calls from a health care professional to work on personal health goals and challenges. SHIFT health coaching is provided by OHSU Health Management Services
